In this blog I will be showing and explaining the reasons why my group and I chose this particular music artist to create our music vide to i will also include a brief biography about my artist as well as the number of albums she has sold and the record label she is signed to and why.
The music artist my group has looked at is Ellie Goulding the reason for this is is because the genre of music the artistes musics comes under is indie and in many other videos that she has produces were not complex or set on a high budgets, the reason we chose this particular genre of music to create our music video to is because with this  particular Genre of music you can use simple ideas to represent the lyrics in the song and still have the same effect in the audience.

Elena Jane Goulding (born 30 December 1986) known professionally as Ellie Goulding is an English singer, song writer and multi- instrumentalist. she was first began her career when she met record producer Starsmith and Frankmusik she was later spotted by Jamie Lillywhite who later became her manager and A&R. Goulding signed to Polydor Records in 2009, in which she released her first EP in 2009, An Introduction to Ellie Goulding.
One of the most prestigious moment in her career was when she became the second to both top the BBC's annual Sound of... poll and win the Critics' Choice Award at the Brit Awards in the same year.
in 2010. her first "album"lights album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and has sold over 850,000 copies in the UK. She also performed a cover of elton johns song "your song" at the wedding reception of Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Buckingham Palace.

history of music videos

Task 1:
Create a list of the ways in which people can consume music videos. Has this changed over the years?

Task 2:
Research into the music videos industry and consider how they have developmented and changed over the years. How has this affected the way audiences consume music videos?

Things to consider:
  • MTV (This was the first music channel)
  • Youtube (Most watch video)
  • Bugets
  • Technology/special effects
  • Target audience and the number of views a music video/channel receives
  • How have music genres developed over the years?

The music industry have made it incredibly easy for people to consume music videos whether they be new or old videos due to an increase of technology.

Originally the only way that music videos were watchable were on music channels such as MTV which was the first Music channel that was launched on the 1st August 1981. since then there has been an increasing rise of music channels on tv and on the radio.
It wasn't till the creation of youtube in 2005 where music videos of all genre were watchable and easily shared between friends across the internet. As youtube has evolved and it became more of a personal browser more youtube channels that were dedicated to only uploading  Music videos. This channel was called vevo that was created on the 8th of december 2009 and it supported almost every Musical artist from 1920s blues artist Robert Johnson to modern artists of all genre.

On youtube the most watched music video to date is a music video by south Korean singer PSY, His hit single gangnam style has reached over billion views from its release in 2012.

The most expensive music video ever produced was by Michael Jackson, the song was Scream featuring his sister Janet Jackson and it costed $7,000,000 dollars for the making of the Music video

magazine advert reflection

How did  you use  your research into magazine adverts to start  planning your own ?:

Initially my research consisted of searching the internet for magazine adverts about artists of our genre which is indie pop, I came across were articles about Ellie Goulding and Florence and the machine. Both there articles had a fully displayed poster of the artist which also included a little bit of information about the artist, The information included was the artists name, songs on the album and a rating of the album. Looking at these two adverts me the idea to crate the advert I did.
The Inspiration behind the advert I created was had was mostly from Ellie Goulding's advert "lights"

photo shoot

In this blog I will be explaining the Importance of a music video and why is its necessary to have a wide verity of photos to use in your digipac. The reason for the digipac is to offer a inside view of the artist and to give a bit more info about her new album.

The images that we have chosen to use are

Analysis of a magazine advert

In this advert of Ellie goulding the purpose of the magazine advert is to promote her new album, the way this this has been achieved is by having Ellie (the artist) in the centre of the advert and also by making her the largest object on the advert so she is not easily missable, her being the artist makes her the the most important object on the poster and the main attraction. underneath is her name in a very 1940s broadway style font symbolising that she is a main attraction in the music industry and is very glamorous and stunning performer. This is also shown by her album name "lights" showing that she is much like a shining star and is in the lime light. very last are reviews of her album by music critics, the review that this album has received by critics is fabulous and has gained a 4 out of 5 star review, the reason for this is that if an album is well reviewed by critics then it encourages more people to purchase the album.

This advert is for florence and the machine slightly differs to Ellie goulding as it does not take up as much of the advert and it has more of the artists body in the advert and more of a colourful background symbolising that she is a very wild and colourful personality, this wold suggest that her music is not very mainstream and has a twist tot he pop genre the colours used show a bright artist who is more motivated by good thought and music rather that more emotional and depressing songs  Other than the artists image on the adverts there is not much else to the advert including the style of font. compared to Ellie Goulding the font if dull and boring as if its all been done before, a benefit of the font is that even though it is not colourful or it is a stand out font this means that is easier and more assessable for the audience to read.

PLanning lighting and colour

Lighting and colour
In every music video of all genre colour and lighting is always used and this is because it sets the setting and scene, without lighting no mood can be set and the audience and loose track of what the story is about and why that particular scene has been used. The reason behind the colour of costumes is it can be a way for the audience to understand what genre of music the music video is, the use of costume is also used to depict what type of person the artist is and and how they are feeling,

In our music video we are filming most of our scenes outside so we are going to use natural lighting in the scenes, when we film inside we will use the lighting provided by lights in the room and any extra light we can use. whenever we see our artist with a girl we want a bright vibrant light

research and analysis of a star dyers theory

In this blog I will use dyers theory to show how stars in the music industry are effected by the media and fame. The artist i will be analysing is Justin Bieber. This is because from when he was first signed by his record label at then age of 13 his fans have seen a dramatic change in his attitude and music.
From a young age he was seen as a sweet innocent boy who aimed at young teenage girls.

however as his career progressed and he got older he was found to change in the public eye and his attitude changed as well as his dress style and hair which he was well known for.
he was found to start hanging around with other young artists from different genres of music such as little twist a rapper how is closely aged to Justin, soon after the two young artists started hanging out with each other there were roomers that the two were using illegal  substances in there spare time, later images were realised of the two of the smoking cannabis. this caused a lot of controversy in society on weather  he is still a fit role model for young people.

This particular event proves that dyers theory is logical in the music industry and that music artists do and have to change to be kept in the publics eye even if it begins to give them a bad reputation and name.  we can also see that he has changed by looking at how his music has changed, the firs music video i will be looking at by this artist is 1 less lonely girl, This particular song was his first realised song and music video
in this Music video you can clearly see that Justin is played off as a innocent young teenager

Planning cinematography

why is cinematography important?
what 4 camera shots will you use?
what effect do they create?
what is their purpose to your music video?
how does it build a relationship with your audience?

The use of cinematography  in the music industry is to find the perfect camera shot to portray the artist or object used in the particular scene. the reason for this is because it makes the video look as professional as it can be wile also considering there budget for the video. Each different camera shot and angle has a different effect on the scene and on the audience, It also is used to show different power and authority between characters in the music video for example if there is a fight between a couple then the male figure will be seen more dominant and he will be shown to be powerful by a ow camera angle.

In our music video four camera angles that we are certain of using are a Panning shot, close up, mid shot and a low angle shot. Each different camera angle and shot has been used for a different reason this is because different moments in our music video need to be represented by the right camera angle to give a certain effect that will have a particular impact on the audience the use of the right camera angle or shot is crucial as without it there could the audience could louse interest in the music video if the shots are too repetitive and if they don't make sense or flow with the story of the music video the audience can be turned of all together.

Panning shot
The reason that my group and I have decided to use this shot is because it has enabled us to create a effect and it also shows our artist trying to move on from his previous relationship but he can not find the right girl to replace her with. The way that we are going to create this effect is we are going to have the artist and a girl he is on a date with walk past a tree as we follow them with a camera they pass behind the tree and come out from behind it as they appear from behind the tree it will show the same artist but with a different girl on the same date. We think that the audience can relate to this as after getting out of a relationship there is a period of time where you are looking for someone to replace them with however its never the same for a period and and its meaningless being with them

copyright

Copyright is a law that states that the original creator has exclusive right to the product, however this is only enforced for a period of time, the original use of copyright was a way that the government could reduce the use of a product being copied and reused for another own benifitial gain to make profit. many critics claim that the copyright law protects corporate interests while criminalising legitimate use,

Because we are using a song that already has the copyright law in forced  on it we must ask permission from the artist or record label to use the song without them allowing us to used there product we will be breaking the law and will have any work we have produced using there product taken away or removed from any websites we have published it on. To make sure we are operating within our legal bounders we have devised a letter that we will send to the record label asking them permission to use there product

Dear copyright holder,

We are a group of A Level student’s from West Hatch High School, writing to request your permission for the song You my everything (skins fire remix)  by Ellie Goulding With your permission, we would create a music video for this song, which would part of our coursework.
The song would only be used in an educational context, viewed only by our media class and OCR examination’s officer. It will not be released to a large audience. The audience and your company would of course, be recognised throughout and a copyright notice may be added to our projects if you wish. In this case, you may send us this information.
We look forward in hearing from you,

Kind regards

Storyboards

what is the purpose of a storyboard:
The reason why a storyboard is planned before shooting a music video is to understand what shots will be used in the song and at what times, this helps with time management of production, it also allows any room for error and for it to be improved this then reduces money loss and save money for  the production company.
in order for there to be a music video a record company must first fund the artist, without a storyboard the record label has nothing to go on on how much of a budget to set and what will be required in the video. Having a starboard allows the artist and director to portray basic ideas on the production and how the finished will look and be able to compare  the finished product to the original storyboard. With out a storyboard it world be nearly impossible to sell the idea to a client.

The way that My group and I  came up with the ideas of our music video is that we developed a questionnaire that allowed us to ask the public what they would like to and expect to see in a music a video, the feedback we received is what gave us our initial planing ideas that we want to incorporate into our music video. this was our primary research and what gave us our main ideas that we should incorporate into our music video, the secondary research that was used to further our knowledge in what we should use in our music video came from watching music videos from the same artist who's song we have chosen and also viewing similar music videos from the same genre of music that we have chosen.

The way my group and I storyboard our music video is that we listened to our chosen song several times, we then brainstormed ideas on whet we should incorporate into our music video and if it would flow with the beat of the song and if it would closely relate to the lyrics.
