the ideas he came up with are
- Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop). [this is also known as iconography] - There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting). - There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting). - The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
- There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
- There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc)
each one of is clearly shown in nearly every music video released before the book was published and every modern day music so far.
The music video i am going to analyse to prove that the points shown really are in every modern music video is " keep rolling by limp bizkit
Limp bizkit are a hip hop/rap group from the 90 and in this music video there are many moments and actions s that support Goodwins theory.
this screen shot backs up theory 1 as it shows the lead artist rapping in centre screen while the dancers in the background are copping his every move, this proves the theory that iconography is a necessary convention in a music video.
this screen shot supports the second point as the lyrics relate to his hand movements and the actions he makes every time the chorus is sung we can see this because the line we are focusing on is keep rolling and this is being sung whilst he is waving his hands back and forth just like driving are car, which we also see several times throughout the music video.
theory 3 can be hard to show in a music video as you need some how relate the genre of music to the setting and surroundings. however in this case it is easer to see how this particular song and genre can relate to the lyrics. The way that this shot relates to Goodwins third theory is that the song is very heavy yet up beat and stereotypically the fans and creators of this genre of music are supposed to be very rebellious and break the rules, The way we can see this is that the band are performing on the roof of a ski scraper which is normally a restricted area and also the lead guitarist is dressed in a black and white robe with face paint showing that he does not want to be recognised which links into theory 4
Theory 4 states that in a music video there must lots of close ups of the artist and that they must develop a motifs (a style that they acquire in every or most of there music videos) in the band limp bizkit they have two motifs, these are the red baseball cap that is warn backwards and that the lead guitarist ha his face painted
Theory 5 states that in a music video women are objectified and shown off to make the music video more appealing to the audience. This theory in this case is correct as throughout the music video the backup dancers are all female that have a near exact dress style as the lead artist the only difference is that they have more skin showing to make the video more appealing to a male audience there for objectifying women in this music video.
theory 6 says that in a music video there is at least 1 reference to either a move, tv show or another music video. In this music video is can be considered true as ben stiller a famous hollywood actor is seen getting out of a car and handing the keys to the main artist of limp bizkit. This backs up the theory that in a music video there is some sort of reference to either a movie, tv show or ,music video.
This post demonstrates a baisc understanding of Goodwin's theory. You have included the correct points and examples, but you have not elaborated on the points in enough detail and you have not considered the purpose of the theory in enough detail.
