A music video is a video that runs the length of the song and is normally in sink and connected to the song. normally they are visual aids to held with the understanding of lyrics of the meaning behind the song.
In each different genre of music are different codes and conventions, this is to appeal to their target audience. each different genre of music has its own conventions because each different genre has a different tone and story behind it. If the genre is dance or pop it tends to be more up beat and feel good so the conventions that it will tend to follow will be that the artist will always be the centre of attention and the camera will always be focused on them. in Most rap videos the artist will be dressed in expensive outfits that are well known and labelled brands, this is shown in wiz khalifs paper bound music video as it shows him purchasing expensive cars or wearing designer clothes and expensive jewellery this is clearly shown at the beginning and throughout the music video as he is either rapping about having or wearing designer items. The majority of Wiz Khalifs music is up beat hip hop which will appeal to a target audience of about 17-24 as it is within theses age where the majority of people experiment with marijuana which is the what most of wiz khalifs songs are about. it is because of this constant use of the drug in his song that makes him appeal to the audience.
Common conventions of a dance video is that the video is themed around partying or clubbing scenes where the majority of dance music is played, Clothing is also used stereotypical with short skirts and heels which are typical clothes worn for nights out as well as the behaviour of the people in the video for example lots of dancing, jumping and in particular drinking. Similarly to pop there is a constant fun atmosphere in dance music videos as they are meant to be played when you’re having a good time and aren’t serious.
as my genre of song was indie pop it was difficult to follow the conventions of just one specific genre. The way I resolved this issue is I took 3 conventions from the dance genres to follow and 3 conventions from the indie genre to follow so I both challenged and followed conventions from each genre.
The three conventions I followed from the dance genre are partying/clubbing, drinking alcohol and clothing. In my music video I showed each one of these conventions at least twice but not receptively as i did not want it to follow the dance genre to closely and wanted to show a clear understating of the conventions between the two different genre. The conventions I used to follow an indie genre are having the artist preform in front of the camera, a narrative to tell a story typically about breakups in relationship and emotional story's about or involving the main artist and lastly Mies en scene which is used to help portray with the narrative as indie artists typically dress in very retro and unique clothes that shows Individualism.  |
